Top Tips for SDS Readiness

Map out and review existing visions and other factors that are likely to influence the SDS vision and priorities (e.g. mayoral priorities, local plan visions, local growth plans, commercial investment and local nature recovery strategies), looking for alignment and divergence, and identify key drivers for change. Local growth planning will be influential in setting the vision for an SDS and ensure your vision is area specific. Consider how digital technology and data can help with scenario planning.

Develop an initial proposition as a starter for ten on potential SDS content to frame and test next steps, particularly for evidence and data audit – make sure you take account of nationally prescribed content (to be set out in legislation and the NPPF). 

Prepare a detailed project plan which includes a work programme, a budget (with any gaps identified), a clear risk management plan (both in terms of preparation of the SDS and delivery) and any formal protocols and agreements for data sharing or to support preparation of the SDS (e.g. for managing cross boundary matters or for engagement with key stakeholders, especially national agencies). Remember that preparing an SDS timetable for submission to MHCLG, will be one of the first formal tasks for a strategic planning authority.
