Over the past month, we have worked closely with emerging Strategic Planning Authorities (SPAs) through a series of engagement activities, including the SDS Readiness Workshop (7 November), drop-in sessions, deep-dive discussions, and a dedicated Mayoral Authorities meeting. These sessions provided invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities SPAs face as they prepare for the new statutory Spatial Development Strategy (SDS) system.
The Top Tips presented here are an interim output of this collaborative process. They distill the most urgent and practical actions identified by stakeholders and practitioners during these sessions. While concise, these tips are designed to complement the SDS Readiness Guide and Toolkit (to be shared early 2026), which are being developed around seven core themes:
1. Role Assessment
2. Evidence & Data Audit
3. Engagement Strategy
4. Delivery & Governance
5. Digital & Innovation
6. Skills & Resources
7. Project Delivery Plan
These Top Tips should be read alongside emerging legislation and national policy guidance. They aim to help SPAs build strong foundations, clarify roles and relationships, and prioritise early actions that will accelerate readiness for SDS preparation and delivery, whilst reflecting SPAs are at different stages.
