Coaching and mentoring

Since 2024, we have provided coaching and mentoring support to new planning managers in local government. This was an area identified as a priority in our Planning Skills Analysis in 2024.

This year, a cohort of 42 new planning managers is being coached and mentored by experienced local government managers. They represent almost all areas and regions of England and we’ve carefully matched coaches and coachees. As part of the programme, we are also offering formal coaching training to twelve participants with the offer of gaining a Level 3 ILM qualification in coaching.

Feedback from those coaching and those receiving the support has been overwhelmingly positive with clear benefits for participants, colleagues and a resultant positive impact on the delivery of wider planning services.

This has enabled me to use a broader range of skills in my management at work and allowed me to think of different ways of approaching longstanding issues

I am more intentional in how I engage with them including actively supporting problem solving, encouraging autonomy, and creating space for open discussion

I feel better equipped to make balanced decisions and support others more consistently

When announced, the details and dates of future Coaching and Mentoring opportunities will be published on this page.
