Management Academy

In September 2025, we launched a “Management Academy” to provide leadership and management training for middle-managers responsible for the delivery of Planning Services.

The course comprised a structured six-month training programme enabling participants to develop their leadership skills and to become better managers. 27 participants from 13 of the largest authorities in England took part in the course and were invited to do so by their Head of Service.

The course comprised six modules followed by an optional closing event (Thriving in local government) and programme of Action Learning Sets (ALS):

  • Session 1: Introduction to Leadership and Management
  • Session 2: Direction and Culture
  • Session 3: Managing Risk and Uncertainty
  • Session 4: Teamwork and collaboration
  • Session 5: Communicating Effectively
  • Session 6: Future Leadership and Career Development
  • Session 7: Thriving in local government

Feedback on the Academy has been extremely positive with participants seeing the benefits as they put the learning into practice.

The programme transformed how I see myself as a leader – I now step forward with greater confidence and clarity

I’ve learned to lead with purpose, not just manage tasks

The programme helped me to understand what my team needs to thrive – and how to create the conditions for that

When announced, the details and dates of future Management Academy courses will be published on this page.
