On 9 October 2023, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) announced that £60m has been awarded under Brownfield Land Release Fund (BLRF2) to nearly 100 local authority regeneration projects in England.
On 9 October 2023 DLUHC announced that £60m has been allocated under the Brownfield Land Release Fund 2 (BLRF2) to nearly 100 local authority regeneration projects in England. This forms the second round of a three year BLRF2 programme which will see up to £180m of funding being rolled out via the One Public Estate (OPE) programme.
Across the country from Hull to Somerset, funding will help councils to build more than 6,000 new homes on brownfield sites, transforming unused, redundant or derelict sites into thriving neighbourhoods. Derelict car parks, industrial sites and town centre buildings that have fallen into disrepair will all benefit from the new funding, with the government supporting communities to bring land back into use.
This builds on the successes of the first round of the Brownfield Land Release Fund 2, where funding is enabling release of land for almost 2,400 homes.
To date, the fund is supporting at least 89 local authorities, over 160 projects, and providing almost £100 million to support councils to release land for almost 8,600 homes.

Councils have continued to embrace opportunities to bring brownfield sites in their ownership forward for housing, and this fund plays a key role in helping councils to provide the types of homes their communities really need.
DLUHC has confirmed that the next round of funding through Brownfield Land Release Fund 2 will be announced later this year.
As with previous schemes, the BLRF2 is delivered through OPE, a partnership between the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, the Office of Government Property and the Local Government Association. One Public Estate is a cross public sector programme, aimed at bringing public sector bodies together, to create better places by using public assets more efficiently, creating service and financial benefits for partners and releasing land for housing and regeneration.
