Today (16/05) the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has published its report into Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). The Government has set an ambition of halving violence against women and girls in a decade. The Local Government Association (LGA) has been providing information to the PAC whilst also working with government on the drafting of its new VAWG strategy.

Cllr Tom Hunt, Vice-Chair of the LGA Safer and Stronger Communities Board, said:

“Councils are determined to tackle violence against women and girls and, alongside key partners, play a key role in providing the essential services that individuals affected by this issue rely on for support.

“However, the sad truth is that financial pressures have impacted councils’ ability to provide these services as quickly and effectively as is needed.

“Local government needs long-term and stable financial approach to be able to reverse this. The upcoming Spending Review is the opportune moment for government to ensure that councils are sufficiently funded to keep their victims and survivors safe, whilst working on prevention.”
