Future Female Leaders Programme

The Future Female Leaders Programme supports and empowers women aged 18+ from ethnically diverse communities in and around London to overcome social, educational and economic barriers to diversify and create more coaches and leaders in the sport, health and physical activity sector.

Background

The Future Female Leaders Programme is a programme that supports and empowers women aged 18+ from ethnically diverse communities in and around London to overcome social, educational and economic barriers to diversify and create more coaches and leaders in the sport, health and physical activity sector whilst also increasing physical activity levels in local communities.

During this programme candidates received not only a coaching qualification of their choice but also eight touchpoints with key leaders in the sector including Hope Powell, Manisha Tailor, Michelle Moore and Anita Asante to support their journeys not only as a coach but as a leader.

The challenge

46.2 per cent of London's population is ethnically diverse yet only 12 per cent of sports coaches in London are ethnically diverse (UK Coaching)

The solution

  • Providing women's only coaching courses
  • Creating women's only spaces for sessions
  • Accommodating sessions around religious events such as Ramadan
  • Creating a cohort of women with similar passions and experiences to navigate through the sport sector together
  • Providing role models to show the importance of representation

The impact

  • As per the end of project survey, 91 per cent of the respondents said that the Future Female Leaders Programme has helped them build their confidence and self-esteem.
  • 86 per cent of the respondents said that engaging in sport and physical activity in women-only spaces has increased confidence levels.
  • 91 per cent of the respondents agreed (a combination of strongly agreed and agreed) that they are more confident that they have the ability to advance their coaching career.

How is the new approach being sustained

The 34 girls we supported are now delivering regular physical activity sessions within their communities. Many of which are with associate members in and around London.

They are also replicating this project in Birmingham on a smaller scale to provide more guided and personal support/mentorship to the candidates.
