UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 legacy – Trafford Council

The aim to achieve within two years of the end of the tournament:

• grow the number of female-friendly clubs and establish a club network providing playing opportunities for women and girls of all ages and abilities
• welcome women and girls from underrepresented communities to football
• increase the female workforce and shine a light on female leaders/volunteers within the game in Manchester and Trafford.

Manchester and Trafford are making positive gains against all of the legacy objectives set and there are now over 482,000 more opportunities for women and girls to engage in football in host cities compared to pre-tournament.

These are now 20,000 more women and girls playing football recreationally (at 29,000), 7,000 more competitive opportunities’ (at 9,500, an all-time high) and 1,000 women and girls taking the playmaker coaching course (now 1,101). We have also incorporated extensive Women & Girls provision into both 3G facility developments at Partington Sports Village and Crossford Bridge. Trafford Council Leisure Services are also supporting events in Partington, focused on adult recreational leagues and is seeking to launch more Walking Football programs in Partington, Stretford and Old Trafford.

As part of our Grass Pitch Improvement Fund, 9 Clubs across 11 sites have been supported through SLA’s to access this investment, which will being over £100k worth of investment into pitches over the funding period. Leisure Services is also proactively working with Manchester FA and Trafford based community clubs to attract more investment into Trafford.

Looking forward, it is hoped that growth is sustained, and women’s football continues to thrive and flourish in Trafford as we approach the end of the legacy programme.
