There are several ways we recognise and celebrate the outstanding work of our members: The Clarence Barrett Award; citations; honours and national recognition.
Clarence Barrett Award
The Clarence Barrett Award is our highest award presented to LGA Independent Group Members. The Award recognises those councillors who go above and beyond in their work to contribute something significant to local government and residents.
The award is in memory of our dearly missed colleague Clarence Barrett, a councillor for Upminster and Cranham Residents’ Association, and London Borough of Havering. Clarence sadly passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in 2019.
Clarence had been the LGA Independent Group Treasurer, a key member of the Resources Board and valued Member Peer at the time of his passing. His work and engagement with the LGA over many years led to the LGA Independent Group establishing the Clarence Barrett Award in 2019.
Previous winners of the Clarence Barrett Award are:
- 2023 – Cllr Sue Baxter
- 2022 – Cllr Gillian Ford
- 2021 – Cllr Julian German
- 2020 – none due to Covid-19
- 2019 – Cllr Carla Denyer
Citations
The LGA Independent Group welcomes citations for its members to highlight the outstanding work they do. These are announced at the LGA Independent Group Annual Political Conference in November. To nominate a member colleague for a citation, please contact the LGA Independent Group Office.
Honours and national recognition
The LGA Independent Group will work with the LGA to put forward its members for an honour or national recognition award who have gone above and beyond in selflessly volunteering their time and efforts, gaining the respect of their peers, displaying moral and physical courage.
