Our commitment
Funded by the Government Commercial Agency, the Sustainability Improvement Programme supports councils and strategic authorities to achieve their local climate and adaptation goals. It strengthens capacity and capability across elected members, chief executives and officers, helping to build confident and effective sustainability leadership.
The programme reinforces councils’ and strategic authorities’ role as community leaders, enabling them to inspire residents and work collaboratively with partners on climate and environmental priorities. A range of training, networks and tools is available, covering areas such as energy, the green economy and emissions measurement. Activity also highlights the wider benefits of climate action, including financial savings for the public sector and individuals, alongside improvements in health and employment outcomes.
In 2026/27, our offer comprises:
- Capability building, supporting councils and strategic authorities to upskill and deliver sustainable services through masterclasses, roundtables, virtual events, action learning sets and strategic briefings.
- Peer networks, bringing organisations together to share knowledge and expertise through the Sustainability Action Network, Knowledge Exchanges and a new Sustainability Peers offer.
- Tools and resources, providing a comprehensive portfolio to enable sustainable delivery and practice, including the Greenhouse Gas Accounting Tool Suite.
We produce a free monthly bulletin on climate change which is a round-up of best practice examples and latest news for councils and combined authorities.
Join the climate emergency knowledge hub where councils and combined authorities, and partners who have declared a climate emergency, or made any other type of commitment to reduce carbon and improve the environment, share information and experiences.
View our searchable database of sustainability and climate change case studies. If you are interested in your projects featuring on the database as a case study, please complete a case study form, or get in contact via [email protected].
Thank you to each local authority who responded to our Sustainability Survey. You can read the anonymised results which are greatly informing our support to you going forward.
