Further to our announcement of 3 June that Cllr Louise Gittins will step down as LGA Chair on 7 July, we extend our warmest thanks once again to Louise for her cross-party leadership over the past two years.

Following the local elections of 7 May, the LGA’s political proportionality for 2026 was confirmed and published on 13 May. As Labour remained the largest group, it is for the LGA Labour Group to nominate the Chair of the LGA Board under provision 23.2 of our Articles of Association.

The LGA Labour Group has now completed its own internal elections and has announced that it will nominate Cllr Eamonn O’Brien for the position of LGA Chair.

The election of the Chair will take place at the LGA General Assembly meeting of 7 July. Until then, Cllr Gittins remains as Chair and will continue to undertake all such duties associated with the role and looks forward to supporting Cllr O’Brien as they assume their new cross-party functions.
