Supporting an inclusive sector of wraparound care for school age children

Transitioning to school can be difficult for children with SEND, and activities outside of school can both support this process, and provide a lifeline to families who may need to work, and often value activities outside of the structure of the school day and term.

Liverpool has worked with community interest company Families First to deliver inclusion training along with business planning support which features inclusion centrally. Their training is offered to the wraparound sector in its wider sense (i.e. any activities happening outside of school which families may be using to piece together a childcare solution). Experiences were shared at a LGA webinar to launch the development of the toolkit.

Families First CIC (www.familiesfirst.org.uk) delivered a webinar for the LGA exploring simple solutions to supportng inclusion in the wraparound sector (in it's widest sense). The recording includes the experience of a parent carer Harriet who was forced to give up work after her child was excluded from school and the out of school sector when her first child turned five.

Kids' Inclusive After School Care Case study.  Kids recognised the need for inclusive after-school programs for children with SEND, as many existing programs did not cater to their unique needs. They developed a wraparound care model that offered a safe, supportive environment for children with a wide range of disabilities. The program not only focused on childcare but also aimed to provide enrichment activities that promoted social skills, creativity, and physical activity. Learn more
