Resetting the relationship between local and national government. Read our Local Government White Paper
Our population is ageing. The number of people aged 65 or over in England will increase by 65 per cent in the next 25 years.
An ageing population presents both opportunities and challenges for local government. Opportunities include engaging older people and maximising their contribution to local communities. Challenges include promoting healthy ageing, combating loneliness and isolation and ensuring older people receive high quality care when they need it.
Councils have a clear leadership role in supporting an ageing society.
