A statement from the Local Government Association

“The LGA extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Henry Nowak following this appalling tragedy.

"Our thoughts are with all those affected, including the wider Southampton community, as they come to terms with the profound impact of Henry's murder.

“As the membership organisation for local government, we are supporting Southampton Council during this time so they can in turn support their communities, as we support all our member councils and their communities experiencing significant events.

"Councils play a vital role in fostering community cohesion, supporting those affected by traumatic events, and helping local areas recover from periods of tension and uncertainty.

“As the elected representatives of local communities, it is vital that councillors across the country understand that public confidence depends on public institutions exercising sound judgement and acting without bias or discrimination.

“Where concerns are raised about any public institutional decision making, they must be examined openly without fear or favour. Every citizen, regardless of race, religion or background must be treated equally.

"We encourage everyone to allow the relevant processes to take their course and to support efforts to maintain calm, respect and unity within communities.

"The LGA will continue to support councils across the country to ensure they work must work closely with partners to promote community safety and trust, and continue to support local areas in fostering cohesion, preventing harm, and ensuring residents feel safe.

“Our thoughts remain with Henry’s family and all those affected.”
