4. Working in a political environment

These learning resources support middle leaders in their understanding of leading in a political landscape. They distinguish political, professional and managerial leadership in public services. Some of the learning resources incur costs but others are free to access. They include training courses and learning frameworks that require varying time commitments for completion.

The learning outcomes are:

  • to understand what working in a political environment involves as a middle leader
  • to understand the political structure within a council and how decisions are made
  • build knowledge on the respective roles and responsibilities of councillors, the cabinet, officers and committees
  • identify the needs and values of elected members, their motivations and the implications.

Designed for professionals keen to learn the importance of political leadership in public service management and the dynamics of management within a political system, the learning resources place emphasis on the skills required to manage the interface between political and managerial leadership. You’ll learn to recognise and apply concepts of political leadership in a range of practical real-world situations.

If you work in a council this means you work for democratically elected members. This is incomparable to other sectors such as health."
